A J Lucas, luthier of Classical and Acoustic Guitars

Adrian J Lucas is a well-known English luthier of guitars. A stint as a joiner reinforced his interest in working with wood, originally absorbed as a child in the environment of the family joinery business. Meanwhile constant activity as a musician deepened his understanding of the guitar from a player’s perspective.During his time as a guitar maker hs has illustrated a book on guitar making, ‘Making Master Guitars’ by Roy Courtnall (Robert Hale 1993). This has become something of a standard textbook in the field and was a real stepping stone in his own research and building methods. Subsequently he produced illustrations for ‘The Art of Violin Making’, by Chris Johnson and Roy Courtnall (Robert Hale 1999).

Is Your Hobby Helping or Hindering Your Family Life?

Many people play the guitar or some other musical instrument as a hobby. Ask a room full of people what hobby they have and you will get as many answers as there are people. Others will confess that they don’t have a hobby. They probably do; but just don’t label it as such. By definition, a hobby is an activity or interest pursued outside one’s regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.

The peaceful Guitar came from the Middle East

Did you know that the peaceful and beautiful guitar originated from the Middle East where you find countries like Lebanon, Israel and Iran?Instruments similar to what we know as the guitar have been popular for at least 5,000 years.

The guitar appears to be derived from earlier instruments known in ancient central Asia (Middle East) as the cithara. Instruments very similar to the guitar appear in ancient carvings and statues recovered from the old Iranian Susa. The modern word, guitar, was adopted into English from Spanish guitarra, derived from earlier Greek word kithara. Prospective sources for various names of musical instruments that guitar could be derived from appear to be a combination of two Indo-European roots: guit-, similar to Sanskrit sangeet meaning “music”, and -tar a widely attested root meaning “chord” or “string”.
